Abstract
Korean society is entering a phase in which pluralized educational demand is being created according to class, age, and personal preference. A major example is the recent early study abroad boom. In 2006 close to 30,000 students went on early study abroad and the number of minors staying abroad exceeded 100,000 including students on early language programs aboard. Thus the East Asia Institute planned this survey to propose a more practical educational policy measure in response to the increasingly diverse educational demands.
This survey was conducted in attempt to understand the issue of early study abroad not as a social pathology but a strategic consumption behavior chosen by students and parents the main subjects of educational consumption through a more objective and empirical data collection and analysis. The questionnaire of this survey includes contents on level of satisfaction with public education, expected level of child’s education, reason for private education, attitude towards early study aboard, opinion on early study abroad for own child, whether students who study abroad in early stages have advantages in getting a job, direction of government’s policy on early study abroad, and supply measure for demand for English education.
