Korean society is rapidly experiencing a condensed process of aging and rapidly entering into an aging society. The Korean Labor Institute has been conducting the「Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing」since 2006 under the critical approach that in order to prepare for an aged society there is a need for research on policy and systems which must be preceded by the collection of preliminary data on the aged.
The「Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing」aims to produce preliminary data by accurately identifying the state of economic activities of the middle to old aged population and thus predict their behavioral patterns and make possible the establishment of effective policies based upon this data. The study, rather than a singular cross sectional study of the middle to old aged population, attempts to build a panel survey data which captures the financial changes before and after retirement and how policy changes affect the behavioral patterns of individuals in a time series model.
The questionnaire includes questions reflecting interest in a diverse array of areas including labor economics of the middle to old aged, sociology, social work, public health, family studies, and gerontology, and was designed to allow comparative studies with other countries carrying out panel surveys on the elderly such as the US, England, and other European countries. The contents of the questionnaire can be largely divided into seven areas of demographic background, family, health, employment, income, assets, subjective expectations, and life satisfaction.
