Abstract

The「Korean Innovation Survey (KIS)」is a research project undertaken by the Korean Science and Technology Policy Institute to promote the study of technological innovation by collecting data for the examination of overall corporate activities on technological innovation. The survey was designed based on the basic model of the CIS (Community Innovation Survey) conducted by the OECD and the European Union to allow international comparisons, with the addition of reflecting the specialized characteristics of the Korean case. The survey was conducted since 1996 among the manufacturing and service sectors switching every other year, this data was collected from the manufacturing sector in 2005.
The questionnaire includes contents on corporate information (industry, type of corporation, number of employees, financial status, merger and acquisition), innovative activities and results (product/service, process, marketing, execution of organizational innovation, percentage of sales taken up by innovative products, results of patent application), cost of innovation (innovation costs and costs per activity and relative importance), source of information (degree of importance per source of innovative information), purpose of innovation (degree of importance per purpose of innovation), source of technological acquirement (state of technological acquirement and degree of importance per source of acquirement), methods of technology protection (degree of importance per methods of innovation monopoly), R&D activities (spending records, size of personnel, facilities), and obstacles of innovation (degree of significance per obstacle).
