Korean society has yet to reach an agreement on neither a concrete action plan on reunification nor an ideal image of a unified society. Thus a practical discussion on reunification must take place and an appropriate approach to achieving reunification and policies are in need. Problems related to the current rise in North Korean defectors, North Korean nuclear program, and increase in South-North economic exchanges and their effects on diplomacy between neighboring countries is becoming an important issue. The purpose of this survey is to provide preliminary data for the establishment of effective reunification policies by examining the average citizen’s opinion on reunification and South-North relations on a comprehensive and diversified level.
The questionnaire is composed of five sections including opinion of reunification, attitude towards North Korea, evaluation of North Korean aid, attitude towards sae teomin (North Korean refugees), and attitude towards relations with neighboring countries. The section on opinions on reunification includes the reasons and need for reunification, possible time period for reunification, level of contribution of South-North exchange and cooperative efforts on reunification, urgent issues in achieving reunification, and questions on social changes before and after reunification. The questions on attitude towards North Korea includes democracy in North Korea, trust in the North Korean government, North Korea’s degree of change, experience related to North Korea, differences between South and North, possibility of North Korea’s provocation by armed forces, and attitude towards dangers of North Korea’s nuclear program. The section on evaluation of North Korean aid includes evaluation of improvements in the lives of North Koreans through aid, appropriateness of the amount of aid, and the evaluation of government policies. The questions on sae teomin include familiarity with sae teomin and onions on the accommodation of sae teomin. The section on attitude towards relations with neighboring countries include attitude towards the amity and threat of neighboring countries, relations with neighboring countries, expectation of neighboring countries’ on Korea’s reunification, and the need of cooperation.
